HISTORY OF PALO ALTO BLACK AND WHITE BALL

In 1986, as financial pressures increased on city government, a concept emerged of a foundation that would enhance recreational and cultural services while serving as a model for public private partnerships. The Palo Alto Recreation Foundation was born.

One of the foundation's first challenges was to save Palo Alto's beloved May Fete Children's Parade, which was threatened by budget reductions. This led to the first Palo Alto Black and White Ball held at the Lucie Stern Community Center in 1987 with 125 attendees.

The Palo Alto Recreation Foundation (PARF) has continued to be the principal sponsor and beneficiary of the Ball. With the participation of a generous community, the Ball has supported innovative city recreation programs, scholarships, youth programs, community events and grants. In 2004, Palo Alto schools were added as beneficiaries through contributions to Palo Alto Partners in Education (PiE).

In 2002, the Black and White Ball became a biennial event. Past themes have included Boots, Bits & Bytes; It's Magic; Pink Cadillac; Dazzling Diamonds & Fabulous Fakes; Moonlit Cinema Paradiso; Jet Set! Make The Scene at a Global Celebration, and Plaid to be Here.

The 2010 Ball promises to be another not-to-be missed gala with the theme of “Masked Ball". Guests will dazzle the night away in an extraordinary setting created by combining unique décor, artistry and features in one great location that will result in an experience that will make for long and lasting memories!
